Haiti is among the world’s poorest countries, ranked 158 out of 187 countries in the Human Development Index. By 2007, 45 percent of the total population of 9.5 million was living in urban areas. Between 1994 and 2006, NGOs and international organizations undertook numerous interventions to improve living conditions in Haiti, especially in the largest cities. However, inadequate provision of basic services (especially clean water and sanitation) remained, despite some improvements. Years of political instability have added to the hardship of urban citizens, who face deteriorating living conditions and the very real risks presented by natural disasters.
